Being Martha

17:07

No, not Martha Stewart, although I do come pretty close ;)

Luke 10:38-42
New Living Translation (NLT)
Jesus Visits Martha and Mary

38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

I'm writing this post for my own benefit mainly. I'm in full on preparation mode for this week's events and I'm finding myself drawn to the story of Mary & Martha. It's my natural instinct to be a Martha. I'm a planner, a do-er, an organiser, a meddler and a see what's going on-er.

Some of the fudge cake ingredients. Yes, some.
I'm constantly being reminded that there is more to this week than the details. There is more to the ladies night than whether the bunting gets put up, or whether the table runners are sewn. It's about spending time with our friends, experiencing a taste of America and about enjoying the moment.

It's hard to fight against one's natural instincts, but when I wake up in the night thinking of all I have to do and what I might have forgotten then remembered, then forgotten again, it's important to remember that I'm not the lynchpin, I'm not the key. I'm not the only one.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that if I wasn't around, things would continue, things would get done, events would happen and God would move as He sees fit. Who am I to think that God needs me? How arrogant of me. It's my pleasure to serve, it's my honour to do what I have been equipped to do, but I must not change the focus from Him, to me and the tasks I do.

Table runners, bottom all done, top only the top done.

How often do we bustle around church, all important, got to do this, see this person, make sure that gets done and we forget the reason that we're there. It's not for us, it's not so that things get done.

Don't get me wrong, it's important that we all take part, we all aid and assist, but we need to go into these events thinking of more than the tasks.

Not just with church, it's easy to help out at a party and not really enjoy it because it became all about the preparation and the planning. Sometimes I say the best bit about parties is the getting ready, but it should be about celebrating with our friends, enjoying their company and spending time with those we don't see every day.

So today as I've got about an hour left to finish the last table runner before running up to the church to check the desserts are out defrosting and then putting the laundry away before cleaning the bathroom, cooking dinner and going to bed before 11pm (I'm blaming that one on you Toni!), I'm trying to relax and enjoy the tasks knowing that they're a small part, not the main event.

Enjoy your week , the scheduled posts are still coming! x
